Old Colcestrian Society Summer Reunion 2018

The Old Colcestrian Society held its 2018 summer reunion on Friday 29th June. The day began with the Annual General Meeting in the school library, at which Old Colcestrian Greg Dunn was elected President for 2018-19 and the two previous CRGS Headmasters, Ken Jenkinson and Stewart Francis, were appointed Honorary Life Vice Presidents, the highest honour that the society can bestow.

This was followed by a talk by the outgoing President, Trevor Hearn, on his new history of CRGS, 'Vitae Corona Fides', published on Reunion Day. This fascinating and superbly researched work can be obtained from Amazon at this link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vitae-Corona-Fides-History-Colchester/dp/1782226001.

Harry Barber, an Old Colcestrian who left school last summer, gave a very interesting talk on his recent trip to North Korea. The members and their wives also heard from School Captain Sol Hyde who has been leading a CRGS young enterprise project on mental health for school students. He briefed on a booklet that his group has produced and which has already been rolled out to a number of schools.

Next, James Farley, a current CRGS Sixth Former, told the members about the wooden pens that he makes, which can be personalised. He has generously offered to give a percentage of sales profits to the society.

This was followed by a moving ceremony in the school’s garden of remembrance during which Old Colcestrians, CRGS staff and current students planted commemorative poppies in honour of 18 former CRGS pupils who were Killed in Action during the Great War in 1918.

Later in the afternoon, members indulged in a sumptuous lunch at the field and enjoyed watching the annual CRGS vs Old Colcestrian Society cricket match, played in glorious sunshine.

Many of those present pronounced the day one of the most enjoyable summer reunions in their memory, and both the AGM and the afternoon events attracted record numbers. It was a particular pleasure for members to be joined during the day by the Headmaster, several members of staff and the School Captain together with the Head Boy, Oliver Pearey and Head Girl, Beth Wright.
