A team of four students from Colchester Royal Grammar School have outperformed more than 30,000 students nationwide to become monthly winners in the 2016 ifs Student Investor Challenge.

The “brick brick brick brick brick” team, consisting of Shiven Hirani, Kevin Patrick, Sarah Stanton and Connor Cheverall made a virtual profit of more than£6,000 in just two months of the stock market investment competition.

As monthly winners the team have secured an initial prize of £100 and stand a good chance of reaching the second round of the competition.

The ifs Student Investor Challenge is the largest competition of its kind for schools in the UK. Run by financial education specialist ifs University College over a period of five months, the competition helps teenagers learn about financial investing through trading in virtual shares. Each team starts with two portfolios in which to invest, a £100,000 share portfolio and a longer-term strategic portfolio, with the eventual winners earning an all-expenses paid trip to New York City.

Alison Pask, Vice Principal at ifs University College, said:

Although only investing for a short while, the team from Colchester Royal Grammar has demonstrated impressive financial acumen through some shrewd trading decisions and we wish them – and indeed every other school taking part – good luck as the competition progresses.

“It is encouraging to see such fierce competition already. Every student taking part in the Student Investor Challenge will acquire important transferrable skills, such as teamwork, research and communication.”
