Double Public Speaking Success For CRGS!

Colchester Royal Grammar School are celebrating a double win at the Senior Youth Speaks public speaking competition, which took place at Colchester Town Hall on Tuesday 31st January. Up against four other secondary schools in Colchester, the senior team – made up of Year 10 students Naman Gupta, Edward Lucas and Nur Hussein – took to the stage in the Council Chambers to perform their roles as Speaker, Chairperson and Vote of Thanks respectively.
Naman chose to deliver a speech about society’s stereotypical views on masculinity, named ‘Man Up: Big Boys Don’t Cry.’ From start to finish, Naman spoke with articulation and fluency; at times, he moved the audience with his effective communication skills and shocking statements. With this in mind, he thoroughly deserved to win the Best Speaker award, which was presented to him at the end of the evening. Edward, too, performed well as the Chairperson, keeping everything in control and speaking eloquently; he was complimented by the judges for his lovely voice, as was Nur Hussein who successfully carried out his role as Vote of Thanks and addressed the audience with ease. Not only did the Best Speaker award go to the CRGS team, but CRGS also won Best Team overall – a double success which happens rarely in these contests. Miss Baines, who coached the team, stated that ‘the senior team improved so much since rehearsals started. The students always took comments on board and got better and better every time. They worked incredibly hard and it paid off with CRGS winning both awards. I am very proud of all of them.’
This victory also comes after CRGS won the Rotary Youth Speaks competition on Monday 23rd January with the intermediate team, meaning that CRGS has won the first heats of both the Intermediate and Senior competitions this year – a fantastic achievement. Both teams have now progressed through to their respective District Finals, which will take place in the Council Chambers, Chelmsford. Good luck to all participants!
