Memorial Service at the Colchester War Memorial

On Saturday 25 April, the Royal British Legion held a wreath-laying service at Colchester War Memorial, at the gates to the Castle. The service commemorated the soldiers who died in the Gallipoli Campaign one hundred years ago.
Two students represented CRGS, Sameer Rayner and Rounak Ghosh, both of 8G. They laid a wreath in honour of former student Jack Flux. Jack was captain of both the cricket and football teams, and was successful in Athletics. He was 6'3'' in height, unusual a century ago, and comments were made in the school magazine about his athletic ability and advantageous height.
After leaving CRGS, Jack apprenticed at a local farm, then emigrated to Australia to work on a sheep farm. Two years later war was declared, and Jack enlisted in the Australian 10th Light Horse Regiment, age 22. Of the 300 men of the 10th Light Horse, 58 were wounded and 80 were killed, including Trooper Jack Flux. His body was never recovered.
